    Prediction of crushing stress in composite materials

    A simple mathematical model for predicting the crushing stress of composite materials was derived and presented in this paper. The present knowledge of fracture mechanics and strength of materials are used as the basis for the model. The fracture mechanics part of the analysis was based on energy release rate approach; the energy release rate, G, of the proposed model was determined by this approach. This energy release rate was based on the Mode I (opening or tensile mode) failure. As for the strength of materials part analysis, buckling theory was used to determine the critical load of the fibre beams. These two engineering concepts were combined to form the equation for the proposed model. The derived equation is a function of the materials properties, geometric and physical parameters of the composite materials. The calculated stresses from the derived equation were compared with experimental data from technical and research papers. Good agreements shown in the results are encouraging and recommendations for future analysis with different modes of failure were also presented. This paper enables engineering designers to predict crushing stress in composite materials with confidence and makes their work more efficient and reliable

    Preliminary results on literature review skills of students doing capstone projects

    [Abstract]: A survey was carried out to investigate literature review skills of students doing their final year research projects. This survey was given before intervention to their literature review skills. Their literature review skills revealed by this survey were compared with that of a post-intervention survey, which was in turn compared with the literature review skills revealed in their intermittent reports. From the pre- and post-intervention surveys, it seems that the intervention workshops work and the percentage of students understanding how to conduct a literature review has improved from 11% to 78%. However, the intervention was not so successful if the literature review knowledge revealed by the project appreciation was compared with that of pre-intervention survey

    Dark Matter in Gauge Mediation from Emergent Supersymmetry

    We investigated the viability of neutralino dark matter in the gauge mediation from emergent supersymmetry proposal. In this proposal, supersymmetry is broken at Planck scale and consequently, the gravitino is superheavy and completely decouples from the low energy theory. Squarks and sleptons obtain their soft masses dominantly through gauge mediation with other mechanisms highly suppressed. The lightest supersymmetric partner, in contrast to traditional gauge mediation, is a neutralino which is also a dark matter candidate. By explicit calculation of the low energy spectra, the parameter space was constrained using the WMAP observed relic density of dark matter, LEP2 Higgs mass bounds, collider bounds on supersymmetric partners and exotic B-meson decays. We found that the model has intriguing hybrid features such as a nearly gauge-mediated spectrum (the exception being the superheavy gravitino) but with a dominant mSUGRA-like bino-stau coannihilation channel and at large tanβ\tan \beta, A-resonance-like annihilation.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Trade protection and industry wage structure in Poland

    The authors examine the impact of Poland's trade liberalization in 1994-2001 on the industry wage structure. The liberalization was undertaken in preparation for Poland's accession to the European Union and was more pronounced in industries with larger shares of unskilled labor. Their analysis indicates that a decrease in an industry tariff was associated with higher wages being earned by workers employed in the industry, controlling for worker characteristics and geographic variables. The result is robust to including year and industry fixed effects, controlling for industry-level exports, imports, concentration, stock of foreign direct investment, and capital accumulation. The finding is consistent with liberalization increasing competitive pressures, forcing firms to restructure and improve their productivity, which in turn translates into higher profits being shared with workers. It could also be potentially attributed to trade liberalization lowering the costs of imported inputs, which enhances firm profitability.     Intrinsic degree-correlations in static model of scale-free networks

    We calculate the mean neighboring degree function kˉnn(k)\bar k_{\rm{nn}}(k) and the mean clustering function C(k)C(k) of vertices with degree kk as a function of kk in finite scale-free random networks through the static model. While both are independent of kk when the degree exponent γ3\gamma \geq 3, they show the crossover behavior for 2<γ<32 < \gamma < 3 from kk-independent behavior for small kk to kk-dependent behavior for large kk. The kk-dependent behavior is analytically derived. Such a behavior arises from the prevention of self-loops and multiple edges between each pair of vertices. The analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations. We also compare our results with those obtained from a growing network model, finding that they behave differently from each other.Comment: 8 page
